New Delhi: Global electronics giant Apple has sought a meeting with Trai nearly two months after the regulator reprimanded the company for not allowing its customers to share details of pesky callers and unwanted messages with authorities and mobile operators.
The company, which has initially been hesitant to allow its operating system (iOS) ecosystem to align with Trai’s Do-Not Disturb (DND) app, has now expressed its willingness to discuss the issue.
“Apple has written to us, and have said that they want to share some of the suggestions,” Trai chairman RS Sharma said on the sideli-
Pnes of the India Mobile Congress (IMC).
“We have invited them, and we will discuss the issues with them and talk to them,” Sharma said, adding that the company has so far “not given any commitment” on finding asolution to the issue.
TOIwas the first to report on the unhappiness of Trai with Apple over its refusal to allow the sharing of details of pesky communication with the regulator’s app in its ed- tion dated August 8. “While Google’s Android supports our Do-Not Disturb (DND) app, Apple has just been discussing, discussing, and discussing. They have not done anything,” Sharma had said in early August. The regulator has accused Apple of engaging in “data colonisation” in India and being “anti-consumer” by not allowing customers to pass on the details of pesky communication.
Sharma said that the regulator is mindful of the concerns around privacy of customers. “We do not access call details.” While Android had allowed its operating system to sync with Trai’s app at the time of its roll-out around a year back, Apple has been non-committal on the matter so far.
