SECRETARY GENERAL ANTONIO GUTERRES LAUDS INDIA'S CONTRIBUTION TO UN
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and praised India's contribution in the world body's efforts towards sustainable development, peace operations and tackling climate change. The meeting took place yesterday after Swaraj delivered her second annual consecutive address to the UN General Assembly sessions. She was accompanied by Minister of State for External Affairs M J Akbar, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and India's Permanent Representative to the UN Syed Akbaruddin during the meeting.
"The secretary-general expressed appreciation for India's contributions to the United Nations on climate action, peace operations and sustainable development," a readout of the meeting issued by Guterres' office said. During the meeting, the UN chief welcomed India's efforts to implement the '2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals', it said. "They also discussed the importance of UN reforms," the readout said.
SUSHMA SWARAJ CHEERED AS SHE SPEAKS IN HINDI AT GENERAL ASSEMBLY
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was cheered from the floor and the Indian guests in the visitors gallery as she strode wearing her trademark saffron saree on to the stage with a gilded background in the wood-panelled General Assembly building. As she spoke in Hindi, with simultaneous translations in five languages, from the dark stone podium embossed with the UN logo, she received applause when she talked of fighting terrorism.
There was some laughter when she derisively said that the world reacted with, "Look who is talking!" when Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abassi accused India of state-sponsored terrorism. She started her speech with a report card on India's achievements in development, before segueing to Pakistan and terror, raising her voice in indignation. Sushma Swaraj then switched to an almost pleading tone calling for action on climate change. And then she laid out India's case and UN reforms in a firm voice.
US BOMBERS, FIGHTERS, STAGE SHOW OF FORCE OFF NORTH KOREAN COAST
US Air Force B-1B Lancer bombers escorted by fighter jets flew in international airspace over waters east of North Korea on Saturday, in a show of force the Pentagon said demonstrated the range of military options available to President Donald Trump. The flight, which was disclosed shortly before North Korea's foreign minister was due to address the United Nations, was the farthest north of the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea that any US fighter jet or bomber has flown in the 21st century, the Pentagon said.
"This mission is a demonstration of U.S. resolve and a clear message that the President has many military options to defeat any threat," said Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White, calling North Korea's weapons program "a grave threat." "We are prepared to use the full range of military capabilities to defend the U.S. homeland and our allies." North Korea has launched dozens of missiles this year.
FILM FRATERNITY EXTENDS SUPPORT TO MAHIRA KHAN OVER TROLLS
Popular Pakistani actors like Ali Zafar, Humaima Malick, Mawra and Urwa Hocane have lent support to actress Mahira Khan, who was trolled over social media over a leaked photograph where she can be seen smoking. In the image that surfaced online, Mahira can be seen smoking alongside Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor.
Soon after the photograph went viral over social media, a lot of people started slamming Mahira for smoking and wearing a short dress. However actors from the Pakistani film industry took to Twitter to extend support to Mahira and slam her haters."Every woman has the right to make her own choices in life (as long as she's not hurting anyone else) just like we men do. How we react defines our own character. Choose wisely, for we shall be judged," Ali said in a handwritten note while tagging Mahira.
PAKISTAN NAME FIVE UNCAPPED PLAYERS FOR SRI LANKA TESTS
Pakistan selected fast bowler Mir Hamza among five uncapped players in their 16-man squad for the two-test home series against Sri Lanka in the United Arab Emirates starting later this month. Batsmen Haris Sohail and Usman Salahuddin have both played one-day internationals for Pakistan but are yet to make their test debuts as Pakistan start life without retired batting greats Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan.
Long-serving captain Misbah and former skipper Younis retired from international cricket at the end of Pakistan's test series in West Indies in May. "We are trying our youngsters. Usman Salahuddin and Haris Sohail have been part of the squad in the last two to three series so that we can play them when the seniors retire," Pakistan chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq told reporters in Lahore. "I wanted to give them opportunity in home conditions to boost their confidence. We are hopeful they can fulfil the spots left by the retirements." Opener Sami Aslam, who last played a test for Pakistan in December, was also recalled.
