United can challenge for Premier League title: Scholes

For perhaps the first time since Alex Ferguson’s departure as manager, Manchester United looks like a side capable of challenging for the Premier League title.

It has scored 16 goals and conceded just two from five League games thus far, leaving club legend Paul Scholes impressed.

“After the first few matches it does seem like they now have a squad capable of winning the league,” said Scholes here on the sidelines of Premier Futsal.

“It’s still early and they haven’t played the better teams yet. But from what we have seen thus far, they have the chance to win the league.”

Manchester City, its cross-town rival, has been equally impressive but Scholes still isn’t convinced about the defensive capabilities of Pep Guardiola’s side.

“They have been the most entertaining side going forward in the league,” he said.

“But I don't think their defence has been tested yet. Liverpool could have been a challenge but they went a man down and it made it easier.

“I think United have a team capable of scoring goals and also defending well. You need both aspects to win the Premier League. With City we have to wait and see. There is Chelsea as well who after a slow start have picked up.”

Scholes was also impressed with the way he has been received in India.

“It has been a bit of a surprise because you are not always sure about the kind of reception you get. But in India the people have been fantastic. They have greeted us really well and come to support us which is the most important thing.”
